Individual & Family Health Care Plans
Individual health insurance is coverage that is purchased on an individual or family basis as compared to coverage available through an employer or government program (like Medicare). Individual health insurance can be enrolled directly with private insurance companies or through government-run shopping markets such as the Federal Health Insurance Marketplace. Either way, you can benefit from having an agent to help you sort and understand the plan options.
David Hunt and Associates represent plans that provide minimum essential coverage and meet certain requirements outlined in the Affordable Care Act. These plans have no pre-existing condition clauses and must include these 10 essential health benefits:
Ambulatory patient services (care you get without being admitted to a hospital such as seeing a doctor)
Emergency services
Hospitalization (like surgery and overnight stays)
Pregnancy, maternity, and newborn care (both before and after birth)
Mental health and substance use disorder services
Prescription drugs
Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices
Laboratory services
Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management
Pediatric services, including oral and vision care
Individual Health Insurance plans vary widely in how they provide you with benefits. Some of the factors to consider are Network of doctors, Deductible, Maximum out-of-pocket, and Copay vs Coinsurance.

But the best answer to any question is always a conversation! Contact us for detailed answers or to explore your specific situation.
What is the Health Insurance Marketplace?
The Health Insurance Marketplace is a Federally run service that helps people shop for Healthcare. Often referred to as the Marketplace or the Exchange, it allows you to compare plan details, explore options, and even enroll in coverage.
So what’s a deductible? Is that the same as maximum out-of-pocket?
A deductible is an annual amount you pay before your insurance policy begins to pay for certain services. The maximum out-of-pocket is the most that you can pay for covered medical services in a policy year. The amount of the deductible and the maximum out-of-pocket may be the same amount.
I’ve heard about subsidies for health insurance. Do I qualify?
Premium Tax Credits or “subsidies” are available to help you reduce the amount you pay each month for your health insurance. Household income and size, age, and county of residence all affect the amount of tax credit available to you. Determining your subsidy can be complicated - let us help!
What’s the difference between a copay and coinsurance?
A copay is a preset amount that you pay for a given service or procedure. Services without a copay will have coinsurance. Coinsurance is the percentage of the cost of a given service that you pay after your deductible is met for the year.
Why are there so many different plans?
A wide variety of plans exist to meet the diverse needs of individuals and families. Plans are organized by network and metal level. Network refers to the group of doctors and providers that provide care to plan members. The metal level (gold, silver, bronze) refers to the level of benefits the plan offers.
Can I apply anytime?
In general, you can only apply or change an existing plan during the open enrollment period that happens each year from November 1st to January 15th. But certain income levels or life changes may trigger a Special Enrollment Period that allows you to apply during other times of the year. We can help you determine when you can apply.
